As Sprint Nextel Corp. feels the heat to break even, it’s putting CEO Dan Hesse back on TV for an extra push. the company launched its “Any Mobile, Anytime” offer. The competition has become a lot tougher in the meantime. AT&T and Verizon Wireless now offer unlimited voice and text plans for $70. Mr. Hesse’s job is to persuade consumers that Sprint’s $70 plan, which also includes unlimited data services, is a better deal. Sprint is unusual among the larger telecom carriers in that it uses an executive, rather than a celebrity, as its chief spokesman. T-Mobile has featured actress Catherine Zeta-Jones on and off as its public face, while AT&T recently turned to Luke Wilson in its ads. Since joining Sprint in late 2007, Mr. Hesse hasn’t been shy about coming on TV spots to turn around the carrier, which last year lost 3.5 million subscribers on monthly contracts. But in early 2009, Sprint changed marketing tactics, launched the Hesse-less “Now Network” string of ads and said it would reserve its chief executive for big announcements. After a quarter where Sprint used its price advantage (as well as better devices and improved service) to narrow its loss of post-paid customers to only half a million, Mr. Hesse is back. Sprint thinks it will be able to keep whittling down losses in 2010, but its annual report, released last week, put in stark context how urgent it is for the company to hold onto its customers. “If we are unable to reduce the rate of losses of post-paid subscribers in 2010, it would have a significant negative impact on cash provided by operating activities and our liquidity in future years,” the company said. ...Less
