New figures from research firm comScore show Motorola and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion commanding the U.S. device market. According to the firm's January numbers, close to 23 percent of the 234 million Americans over the age of 13 who owned a cell phone carried a Motorola-branded device. As for smartphones, BlackBerry

captured 43 percent of the 42.7 million people who owned smart gadgets. ~ ComScore derives its figures from monthly surveys of consumers, and its findings represent current phone ownership among the U.S. population. ~ Interestingly, new numbers from research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics paint a slightly different picture. Strategy Analytics showed Samsung as the most prolific cell phone maker in North American in 2009, with 26 percent of the market. LG came in second with 21 percent of the market, while Motorola followed up as No. 3 with 16 percent of the market (RIM was No. 4 with 12 percent of the market). Strategy Analytics' numbers tally shipment numbers rather than ownership numbers, which indicate Samsung could overtake Motorola in comScore's rankings as the Korean firm's devices make their way into consumers' hands. ~ Nokia, by far the world's largest handset maker, barely made a dent in the North American market; Strategy Analytics showed the firm with a 7 percent share in 2009. ~ Apart from its manufacturer rankings, comScore also offered January numbers for smartphone operating systems. While BlackBerry controlled close to half the market, Apple scored a solid No. 2 position with 25.1 percent of the U.S. smartphone playground. Microsoft pulled up third with 15.7 percent of the market, though the firm's share declined by 4 points from comScore's October 2009 figures. Google's Android platform enjoyed the most dramatic gains, with an increase from October to January of 4.3 points, to 7.1 percent. ~ For more: ~ - see this comScore release ~ Related Articles: ~ What were the top smartphone operating systems in October? ~ ComScore: RIM has weak ... ...Less

The Junaio augmented reality browser for iPhone has been updated to version 2.0 to include content categories, event information, and social networking. the screen, only it’s overlaid with pertinent location-based data, and it all adjusts as you move around. Junaio’s claim to fame versus other apps in the category is their implementation of 3D objects. Neat as hell, but damned if I can tell what it would be used for. Games ? ~ One of the problems with augmented reality browsing is that the screen can quickly become crowded with data, which is exactly why Junaio 2.0 is allowing you to pare down the display to news, culture, shopping, games, travel, or food channels of information. If you’re feeling a bit more sociable, you can create a personal channel, where you can post geotagged twitter updates, virtual 3D objects, and other notes. Junaio has also included some transit information for the San Francisco BART, if you need some help getting around. Finally, the Eventual channel is a new database of upcoming events that will pop up. ~ To kick this all off at SXSW, Junaio is having a scavenger hunt, where participants use Junaio to follow clues and gather virtual objects scattered around Austin. If you want to get involved, go to www.scavengar.com . Neat stuff all around. The APIs are pretty open, so if any developers out there feel like dabbling in AR, Junaio is probably worth a gander. For more information, go to junaio.com , or hit the link below to get downloading. Android and Me —
As a reformed BlackBerry user I have fond memories of TetherBerry. Their software offers free tethering without any special add on plans through your carrier and without hacking your phone. TetherBerry has since evolved into simply Tether and they have just released a beta version of their software for Android. ~ Their

lead engineer is reporting speeds up to 6.8 Mbps using the Android beta which is far faster than anything they achieved on BlackBerry. As with most beta software I’m sure it has some kinks to work out, but they are a fan favorite on the BlackBerry sites for both their solid software and customer service so I would assume that will carry over to their Android offering. ~ The instructions I received for installing and using the beta are copied at the bottom of this post, you can sign up for the beta by going to www.tether.com/android-beta . The folks at Tether indicate that you might have to wait a bit after signing up as they are rolling out the beta to users “based on the various timelines.” I’m not entirely sure what kind of lag time we are talking about there, but probably it is best to just head on over and sign up if you are interested. ~ At the moment this is PC only so apologies to Linux and Mac users (I am among you so I feel your pain), but they are also beta testing Mac at present so some of you may not be left out for long. ~ One thing of note is that they normally charge $49.95 for their software which is obviously quite a bit more than Android users are accustomed to paying for anything so it will be interesting to see if they stick to that price point. Considering pdanet is a similar and well accepted tethering option for stock Android phones and it currently goes for just $23.95 it seems as though Tether is going to have to knock $20-25 off if they want to be relevant in the Android market. ~ Here are the instructions : ~ 1. On phone go to Settings->Applications->Development and check USB debugging. ~ 2. Connect phone to PC with USB cable. ~ 3. If yo... ...Less
