As a Mifi user already, I've decided to forgo the 3G version of the iPad and stick with Wifi . The reason is simple. I already use the Mifi to connect my MacBook Pro to the Internet when I am away from home/Wifi. Why would I get another plan when I already have 5GB of data/ month on a much better wireless

carrier (and an iPhone plan with AT&T)? If I didn't have the Mifi, I'd be tempted to jailbreak my iPhone and use it as a Mifi. Certainly there have to be a lot of people out there who need wireless data on the go and would rather be able to connect to two (up to five) devices? That's what Verizon is thinking. Engadget shows that Verizon is going after people like me with this internal Verizon iPad positioning document. AT&T's CEO is thinking people won't want the 3G iPad . He might be right. AT&T ( NYSE: T ) unveiled two new 3G LaptopConnect devices: the AT&T USBConnect Turbo from LG and AT&T USBConnect Velocity from Option, both of which will hit AT&T retail stores, business channels and online beginning March 7th. a compact, lightweight design. The Velocity, on the other hand, goes beyond the “pure modem functionality” to include GPS in the mix, effectively opening the door to location-based applications. Option’s device comes with a free application, the Option GPS Control Panel that connects to Yahoo! Maps and Bing for directions and local points of interest. Additionally, enterprise customers can add tracking and location awareness by signing up for TeleNav Track LITE and Xora GPS Locator from AT&T. Both devices come with an integrated microSD card slot, which turns the modem into a flash drive. AT&T USBConnect Turbo will be available for free, whereas the Velocity could be yours for $29.99. Each offer is good only with a $100 mail-in rebate and with a new two-year DataConnect contract of at least $35 a month. Some leaked internal documents detailing revised coverage maps seem to suggest that an HSPA+ network upgrade map is underway. Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia, and T-Mobile will offer a webConnect Rocket internet stick to take advantage of the “very fast mobile web” speeds. We’re already rocking some HSPA+ up here in Canada on all three carriers, but the primary bottleneck right now is hardware. Speeds this high hold lots of appeal for mobile broadband, sure, but few phones are in a position of being able to handle that much data coming in to do anything worthwhile with it. T-Mobile’s already doing pretty well on the customer satisfaction front , and are doing alright in the financials , but are still the smallest of America’s four major carriers and need to bring their serious A-game if they want to at least nab the number three spot from Sprint ( NYSE: S ). FCC has blessed the recently announced Nokia C5 with the seal of approval . Don’t get too excited, though, it’s the European version of the device, which 3G sings along 900 and 2100MHz 3G bands. You know the math, right – AT&T ( NYSE: T ) works on 1900 and T-Mobile ( NYSE: DT ) on 1700 MHz, so this

move by Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) — to push the not-for-the-USA device through FCC — is obsolete, to say the least. As a reminder, the C5 is a low-cost smartphone with specs that include HSPA connectivity, GPS, 3.2-megapixel camera and Symbian S60. Its MSRP is just $185, hence we expect to see the Finnish company moving tons of these in due course. And if you wonder, we’ve no idea when the U.S. version of the device will be released, if at all. If I were at AT&T or T-Mobile, I would love the idea of offering a low-cost smartphone, so at the end we may see one of these two going for the C5 in an effort to increase ARPUs. Finally, we also don’t know when the Nokia C6 , which was also approved by the Commission recently, will be officially announced. That model looks even more interesting, not least thanks to the WiFi connectivity support… [Via: Engadget ] Related News from IntoMobile: Nokia 7230 with AT&T 3G gets FCC approval Hop-on launches six new phones Nokia E75 gets iSync plug-in to sing along Apple computers Nokia launches low-end CDMA candybar for North America – Nokia 2135 Nokia announces three phones for the U.S. market (1006, 7510 Supernova, E63 NAM) and a new Bluetooth headset Share this: ...Less
