The Dark Knight , an action/adventure take on Marco Polo directed by I Am Legend helmer Francis Lawrence , and an action/sexified adaptation of The Three Musketeers from the producer of Sherlock Holmes . ~ And tonight it was revealed that WB is looking to turn famed Italian artist/inventor/engineer/architect Leonardo Da Vinci into an action/adventure hero. The treatment was penned by producer Adrian Askarieh . The studio is searching for a screenwriter to turn the idea into a fleshed out screenplay. ~ ~ The studio has acquired up a treatment titled Leonardo da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever , which re-imagines Da Vinci as a member of a secret society who “falls headlong into a supernatural adventure that pits the man against Biblical demons in a story involving secret codes, lost civilizations, hidden fortresses and fallen angels.” According to Heat Vision , the story is a mash-up of National Treasure, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Clash of the Titans . Sounds like an interesting idea, but does it work, and is it good? Just days ago we told you about a proposed biopic of original FBI director J. Edgar Hoover that is being written by Milk scribe Dustin Lance Black . Now the film has a director attached, and it isn’t who I expected to hear signing on. looking for a new studio. Given the fact of Eastwood’s attachment it isn’t difficult to guess that we’ll see the film wearing a Warner Bros. shield, since his own production company Malpaso is based at WB. ~ Beyond that, we don’t have a lot more info than when I last covered the project. I’m oddly ambivalent about having Eastwood on this. While, in general, he can certainly turn out a competent, confident film, and attract a high-caliber cast, I’m concerned about this one having an Invictus -level feeling of lethargy. I have a long-standing respect and admiration for Eastwood, and love the fact that he is a very active director as he’s about to turn 80. But he isn’t always the most passionate director we’ve got going, so the question is: do you want to see an even-handed look at Hoover, or one that pushes the depiction of America’s most famous lawman a little bit? ~ It’s that aspect of being able to attract a hell of a cast that interests me. Eastwood’s movies have turned into an Oscar machine for actors, so don’t doubt for a second that he’ll pull some serious talent to this. But who plays Hoover? Shooting is set to begin in Louisiana in April 2010. ~ The Duplass Brothers broke onto the scene as part of the indie mumblecore movement ( The Puffy Chair, Baghead …etc) working on mostly improvised scripts with unknown indie actors and consumer-grade digital video camera. I really love their style and the very real moments that result from their shooting style. The brothers have since been making the quasi-transistion into Hollywood. ~ Their latest film Cyrus premiered at Sundance ( watch our video blog review here ) and stars John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill , and Catherine Keener .I think everyone will agree that Cyrus, the brothers’ Hollywood experiment works on all levels.
